Riverside Housing, Gdańsk, Poland
Eco - houses in Poland and Portugal
The project requirement was for a masterplan concept design and its development in detail, to provide a mainly residential mixed-use project.
The site faces onto an inner-city waterway which lies close to the famously reconstructed historic centre of Gdansk. The design provides a repairing of the former urban pattern, with linear perimeter blocks to the streets, a raised and partly enclosed garden court and a row of more singular buildings to address the waterside. Following extensive consultation from Agnieszka with the City conservation department, required due to the its position within a conservation area, we produced a design that was a contemporary interpretation of the city’s characteristic Hanseatic warehouse forms, executed in brick and tiles. The completed project varied little from our concept and detail project.
After years of long-term, large scale institutional projects we turned our attention to sustainable housing design.
In our design and construction work we follow the three objectives:
economic objective: finding solutions for fighting increasingly high cost of living and using the habitable space in terms of heating / cooling and water usage.
healthcare objective: principle of the design to use natural building materials and installations systems that protect the habitants' health in long term impact.
environment objective: taking care of selection of the building materials and technologies that are not harmful to the climate and minimise the carbon footprint of the construction.
We use our former design experience to implement the newest technologies in terms of all-type house installations like heating and cooling (HVAC) , water supply and sewage, electrics with the special attention to the possibility of using renewable resources . In our healthcare buildings in the past we aimed to create space that supported patients' recovery. Now we try to design homes that can protect people's health and prevent illnesses. In this approach we do not turn our back on the environment but try to create houses in symbiosis with the climate of their specific geographical location. This understanding of the local conditions allows us to use the location's natural resources.
